Student Support Services

Students don’t always learn or grow at the same pace, and it isn’t uncommon for a student to fall behind or struggle at some point in their academic career.  Lawrence E. Jones Middle School cares about the well-being of every student and provides access to several services—including tutoring, mentoring, and counseling services—to help each student achieve to his or her highest potential.

We encourage parents and students to voice their concerns and needs so we can work together to find a solution that works for everyone. Please contact your student's teachers when you have questions or concerns.

Student Study Team
There are times when a Student Study Team needs to meet. Such a meeting is scheduled by the counselor when it is apparent that the student is struggling in multiple classes. At the meeting, where parents, counselors, and other support staff come together to discuss the issues, an intervention plan is created. Sometimes the result may be a referral for additional assessment or support.

Homework Lunch
Homework Lunch is one of the interventions available. If a student is not turning in assignments, a teacher may refer the student to homework lunch. In this case a packet of work is sent home with the student on Friday. Parents are notified that the packet is coming home with a "homework alert" phone call from the counselor. If the student does not turn in the overdue work on Monday morning, he is assigned to "homework lunch." He will be required to spend his lunch period doing the assignments under the supervision of a teacher. He will, of course, be able to eat lunch while doing the work. Not all teachers use this intervention; some may ask the student to attend a "workshop" after school or to work with the teacher during lunch.

Circle of Sisters
In addition to our school counselors and teachers, we are fortunate to have an after-school program "Circle of Sisters".
Circle of Sisters is a free Afterschool Program for girls ages 9-14 that meets 1-2 times weekly throughout the school year. During this time, COS volunteers and group facilitators work with girls addressing issues like self-esteem, peer pressure, friendship, physical development, nutrition, violence, conflict resolution, and drug and alcohol awareness. Circle of Sisters is sponsored by St. Joseph Health System of Sonoma County. http://http://www.circleofsisters-sjhs.org//

Big Smiles Dental Program

We are partnering with a school based dental program that specializes in performing dental care for schildren that may otherwise not receive dental care. The program is FREE if your child is covered by Medicaid or similar programs and there are some no-cost resources available for the uninsured as well. A dentisti will visit LJMS approximately once every 4-8 weekss to provide exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluroide, sealants, and even fillings. The visit takes about 45 minutes per child.

Your child will receive a consent form in the first day packet that explains the program. You can find out more at http://www.bigsmilesdental.org/.
