Students will write an introductory paragraph on the story "Golden Kite, Silver Wind" (P. 492 McDougall-Littell. It must follow the model I showed in class, which includes author, title, genre, a brief one or two sentence summary of the story, and a thesis statement, which will include the theme of the story. We are studying recurring themes in literature, and the students are to figure out what they think the theme of the story is. Students will be working with a group of three to complete a folder on three different short stories that they have read. I have sent home explicit directions and an example of how this folder will be done. They will meet with their group on March 24 to decide who will do what story. They will then complete a rough-draft of their particular story, and I will advise the date of the rough draft. Because the students will have to take turns working on the folder, they will have several homework nights to complete it. The folder will be due on Tuesday, March 30. Students will re-read the story of "Zebra", highlighting examples of negative and positive experiences that the main characters endure. The focus is to look for how positive experiences spring from a negative event, as this is the theme of the story. In the margins, the students should write comments about why they consider this example to be important to the character, how it fits the theme, or any other insight that they would include in the commentary portion of their essay. » read more...
